Daryl Bloomfield & The Mountain to Surf Crew

Traditionally run on the first weekend in March, 2013 will mark the 34th consecutive running of the ‘Mountain to Surf’. This iconic event is now for sale under very attractive terms.

The Mountain to Surf has been run by volunteers with great success. To take the event to the next level the organizing committee has decided it is now time to transfer ownership to a professional event organizer. The committee is determined to see this amazing event prosper and know ultimately this is the pathway forward.

How it begun…

The story goes that in early 1979 Barry Dravitzki uttered the words “why not?” to his brother Gerald when discussing an idea that had been floated in respect to the New Plymouth Harrier Club starting a marathon. After much head scratching around the lack of flat road running in North Taranaki and being determined to avoid a slow course the idea of a ‘Boston type’ point to point course that began higher up and ran over a number of undulations before finishing somewhere near sea level evolved. After a huge effort by year’s end, a course designed by runners for runners was set, organizing committee formed, sponsor found and it was all go for the inaugural 1980 event.

From day one, the ‘Mountain to Surf’ theme caught the imagination of runners (and walkers) as it offered the opportunity to record a ‘PB’ over arguably one of, if not the fastest marathon course in the country. However a ‘PB’ was far from a given, as the course has a bite with its early elevation loss and undulations further on. Arrive at the start line light on training and as some will testify, consequences may await!

Where the event is at today…

Thirty-three events on, the iconic ‘Mountain to Surf’ is now a long established sporting fixture in Taranaki, with wonderful community support and sponsorship in all its various forms. The event boasts a proud and colourful history, stories of conquest (and occasionally despair) abound from those who have taken up the challenge be they from New Plymouth, Auckland, Opotiki, San Francisco or Capetown.

Mindful of the need to grow participation levels and maintain interest those entrusted with the annual running of the ‘Mountain to Surf’ introduced initiatives along the way, including a popular team section where the marathon is completed as a two person team and a tiered Legends Club recognizing participation milestones. Change and technology has been embraced and as with most events, the key tasks of timing, traffic management and entry management are outsourced. After a period of soul searching (and further head scratching, as happened with the Dravitzki brothers in 1979) the current organizing committee have made a decision that for the event to remain vibrant it is time to transfer ownership to a professional event organizer. While not a decision made lightly, it is the correct one to enable the ‘Mountain to Surf’ to be taken to the next level through a management model so the legacy canendure for future generations.
